When do you actually need a protein treatment?
Protein treatments can transform damaged hair, but they can also make healthy hair brittle. The key is knowing which signals to look for before you reach for one.
Hair is roughly 95% keratin. When the cuticle is damaged by heat styling, colour, sun exposure, or mechanical stress, that protein structure degrades. The strand becomes porous and weak. Protein treatments work by depositing hydrolysed proteins (small enough to penetrate or adhere to the cuticle) to temporarily reinforce the strand and reduce porosity.
The signs you likely need a protein treatment: hair that stretches significantly and then snaps rather than bouncing back (low elasticity), a limp or mushy feel especially when wet, increased tangling and breakage after colouring or heat styling, or hair that has become noticeably less defined in its curl or wave pattern. High-porosity hair, which loses moisture fast and has a rough cuticle, tends to respond well to protein.
The signs you do not need one: hair that already feels stiff, dry, or snaps with very little stretch. This can mean the strand is already protein-overloaded, a state more common in low-porosity or fine hair. Adding more protein to an overloaded strand increases brittleness and breakage. If your hair feels rough and dry after a protein treatment, give it at least two moisturising sessions before considering another.
Protein treatments range in strength from light (panthenol, silk proteins in conditioners) to heavy (gelatin, egg, concentrated keratin treatments). Start light, particularly if you have fine or low-porosity hair, and increase strength only if you see a clear response deficit. A leave-in with hydrolysed wheat protein is a reasonable starting point before committing to a full reconstructor.
