When do you actually need a bond repair product?

Bond repair is one of the most marketed claims in haircare right now. It targets a specific type of internal hair damage that not everyone has. Here is how to tell whether you need it.

Inside each hair strand, the cortex is held together by disulfide bonds, the strong sulphur bridges that give hair its structural integrity, elasticity, and ability to hold shape. Bleaching, chemical relaxers, and perms break these bonds by design. Bond repair products (like those containing bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, the active in Olaplex) work by reconnecting broken disulfide bonds from within the cortex.

The clearest signs you need bond repair rather than a standard treatment: hair that has been bleached or chemically processed and now feels mushy or gummy when wet, loses its curl or wave pattern even with no heat styling, or snaps with almost no stretch at all. These are signs of cortex-level structural failure, not just surface dryness or cuticle damage.

Bond repair is distinct from protein treatments. Protein deposits hydrolysed proteins onto the cuticle and outer cortex to temporarily fill gaps and reinforce the surface. Bond repair targets the actual internal bond structure. If your hair has significant chemical damage, you often need both, but in the right order: bond repair first to rebuild structure, then moisture to restore flexibility.

If your hair has not been bleached or chemically processed and you do not show signs of elasticity loss, a standard deep conditioner or protein treatment will likely do the same job at a fraction of the cost. Bond repair is clinically useful for specific damage profiles, not a universal upgrade.
