How often should you wash your hair?

There is no universal answer. The right wash frequency depends on your scalp type, your activity levels, your hair type, and your styling routine. Here is how to figure out what works for you.

Washing frequency is one of the most individual aspects of a hair routine. For some scalp types, daily washing is necessary; an oily scalp that goes unwashed builds up sebum that can clog follicles and cause discomfort. For dry or sensitised scalps, washing every day strips the natural oils faster than they can be replenished.

A useful rule of thumb: wash when your scalp feels uncomfortable, not on a fixed schedule. Itchiness, greasiness, or visible buildup are signals to cleanse. If your hair looks fine and your scalp feels balanced, there is no reason to wash.

If you have textured or natural hair, it is often drier by nature; the curl pattern makes it harder for sebum to travel down the strand. Longer intervals between washes are typically fine for this hair type and often beneficial for moisture retention.

Some people use a conditioner-based wash on lighter days and a shampoo on their deeper cleanse day. This approach can work well for dry or textured hair types that need frequent refreshing without full stripping.
