Emollient vs occlusive: what is the difference?
These two terms appear constantly in ingredient breakdowns but are often used interchangeably when they shouldn't be. They work differently and belong at different points in your routine.
Emollients soften and smooth the hair by filling gaps between raised or damaged cuticle scales. They work at the surface and just beneath it, making the strand feel smoother and reducing friction. Common emollients include fatty alcohols (cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol), esters (isopropyl myristate, caprylic/capric triglyceride), and lighter oils like argan, jojoba, and squalane. Most conditioners are primarily emollient in action.
Occlusives form a physical barrier on the surface of the hair or scalp that slows water evaporation. They do not add moisture themselves; they trap it. Petrolatum (Vaseline), mineral oil, castor oil, lanolin, beeswax, and dimethicone are classic occlusives. Shea butter and heavier plant butters have both emollient and occlusive properties depending on concentration.
The practical difference matters most in layering. Occlusives work best when applied over moisture. Putting a heavy butter or oil on dry hair with no water base seals in dryness. The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) follows this logic: water-based product first, then an oil layer, then a cream to lock everything in. Using an occlusive as the first step, without moisture underneath, is a common reason textured hair routines fail to retain hydration.
If your hair feels coated, heavy, or greasy after moisturising, you are likely using too much occlusive too early. If your hair absorbs moisture quickly but dries out within a day, you likely need more occlusive at the end of your routine to slow that loss. Most people benefit from a blend of both rather than one or the other in isolation.
